The 5 Pillars of Islam
The five pillars of Islam are the foundation of the Muslim belief system. As a Muslim you must follow these pillars to show your faith.
Shahadah
This is a declaration of a Muslims faith and their belief in God, with Muhammad as his prophet. Mulsims would say the Shahadah at important or challenging times in their lives and many try to make it the last words they would say before dying.
Salat
This is the daily ritual prayer that Muslims do each day, 5 times a day. Muslims must follow certain rules and rituals when praying. they must always face in the direction of the sacred city of Makkah. They will also perform ritual washing before entering a mosque along with the use of a prayer rug. Prayer does not need to be done at a mosque it can be done wherever they might be at that time.
Zakat
This means the giving of alms or gifts to those in need. For Muslims this is 2.5% of their income. They will use the money to help the less fortunate or to pay for things that will help the whole community. People can give to the mosque or give the alms directly to those in need.
Siyam
This pillar is followed during the holy month of Ramadan. During that month Muslims are expected to fast during daylight hours. This means they may not eat or drink during that time. Not all Muslims are required to do this as those who are elderly, pregnant, or young children are exempt. The idea is for Muslims to show self-control, devotion, and to teach them what the less fortunate have to endure in their lives.
Hajj
This pillar states that Muslims should at some point in their lives make a pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah. The idea is for Muslims to follow in the foosteps of the prophet Muhammad and Abraham. In making the Hajj they will dress in white so not to distinguish themselves from others and they will visit the Ka'ba, the sacred shrine built by Abraham.
